During the tempering process, approximately 115 MPa of compression is created in the surface layer of the glass. This means the glass has enormous stored energy. The tungsten carbide tip only needs to penetrate 10–20% of the glass’s nominal thickness to break through the compression layer — at which point the stored energy causes the entire pane to self-destruct instantly and completely. Safe-T-PunchTM is effectively the trigger; the glass does the work.
FAQ
Practical answers for buyers, operators and installers.
Short, direct answers covering glass compatibility, operation, installation, testing and safety limits.
Start with the glass.
Safe-T-PunchTM is for correctly marked, readily breakable toughened safety glass. It should not be presented as a universal glass-breaking tool.
Read standards contextSafe-T-PunchTM (also written T Punch or T-Punch, and sometimes searched for as a “safety punch”) is a fixed alternative to a conventional emergency hammer. A conventional hammer is a loose tool that can be stolen or misplaced. Safe-T-PunchTM is permanently fitted to the emergency exit glass, so it is always at the point of use, needs no power, and is operated by a single deliberate strike.
No. SnapXit is a different product and is not made, supplied, tested or approved by Safe-T-PunchTM. Test reports, approvals and the warranty described on this website apply only to genuine Safe-T-PunchTM devices. To confirm you are buying the genuine product, contact us or one of our authorised distributors.
No. Safe-T-PunchTM is designed for toughened safety glass, usually side and rear windows. It should not be used on forward-facing windscreens, which are typically laminated glass.
Yes. Once correctly installed, the device is permanent and not portable. It uses 3M VHB adhesive and a low-profile shape with tapered edges to make hand removal impractical.
It is not a preloaded device that fires when pressed. Breaking the window takes a deliberate strike and creates a loud, obvious event, which acts as a practical deterrent.
No. Safe-T-PunchTM is fully mechanical, so it remains available when vehicle power, electronic windows or door systems fail.
The Safe-T-PunchTM range is designed around 3 joules of energy — equivalent to the single-handed striking ability of a 12-year-old female. Any vehicle occupant of ordinary physical capability can operate the device. The user must also be able to remove the tamper-evident safety tag prior to striking.
The current product information describes resistance to ultraviolet light, rain, snow and exterior use, with photoluminescent instructions for low-light, smoke-filled and submerged conditions.
Yes. Safe-T-PunchTM has been tested on 8 mm toughened glass used for marine vessel bridge windows.
Yes. Each device can be traced to its material batch records.
Safe-T-PunchTM is produced under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, with component and complete-device verification before sale.
Approval is achieved during the whole-vehicle homologation process, with acceptance by international competent authorities including the UK VCA and South Africa's NRCS.
It was invented in South Africa after the 1985 Westdene bus disaster, where passengers could not escape a submerged bus through its emergency exits.
Always fit within 20 cm of a secure window frame — never in the centre of the glass. The centre of a pane has the most flex, which reduces effectiveness. Device access should be suitable for both left- and right-handed operation and free from obstructions to a hand strike. On construction equipment, confirm placement does not hinder operator visibility or machine function.
Yes. Placing devices directly opposing each other on the same pane does not affect performance. Some installations use this approach to provide accessible egress from both inside and outside the vehicle.
The Safe-T-PunchTM range is made from corrosion-resistant aluminium (body) with a tungsten carbide impact tip. The STP50P is made from ABS plastic. These materials withstand UV, heat, salt and chemical exposure, making all devices suitable for marine, outdoor industrial and harsh-environment applications.
Daily: Visual inspection of the tamper tag, device body and instruction sticker. No tools required.
Annually: Remove the safety tag and check that the plunger moves freely. Replace safety tag. Refer to the Maintenance Instructions document (available in the Resources section) for full procedure.
Regular education and clear signage ensure the device is understood as emergency equipment only. Units have been in active service across the UK, Europe, Canada and South Africa for many years and there are no reported incidents of misuse. The deliberate nature of the strike — and the loud, obvious result — acts as a natural deterrent.
