UN Regulation No. 107

Emergency-window requirements, clearly mapped.

This easy-reference guide maps Safe-T-PunchTM design features to the emergency-window requirements introduced in the 10th series of amendments to UN ECE R107 for M2 and M3 passenger vehicles.

The toughened-glass route

What the regulation asks for

For a toughened-glass emergency window, R107 requires an easy-to-operate device that lets one person break and remove each pane from inside the passenger compartment within 20 seconds. The Technical Service verifies the operation and the time to the required free opening.

7.6.8.2.1 — Easily and instantaneously operated

Safe-T-PunchTM can be operated easily and instantaneously. Once the tag is removed, a single deliberate action on the device is all that is required.

7.6.8.2.2 — Toughened glass and operability

Safe-T-PunchTM is designed for use with toughened safety glass and is simple to operate. The vehicle installation must still be verified by the Technical Service through the required timed test.

7.6.8.2.2.1 — Fixed in the right position

The device is fitted on the emergency window in the upper third of the glass. At the rear, it can be fitted centrally. Its removable tag helps prevent unintended use and supports the installation evidence required for approval.

7.6.8.2.2.2 — Visible and marked in red

The red device is fitted directly on the glass, making it clearly visible to passengers nearby rather than hidden behind curtains or elsewhere in the cabin.

7.6.8.2.2.3 — Available at all times

Safe-T-PunchTM is permanently fitted adjacent to or on the emergency window. Its mechanical operation does not depend on the vehicle power supply.

7.6.8.2.2.4 — An additional action to unlock

The tag must be removed before the device can be operated. This provides the additional action intended to help prevent unintended operation.

7.6.8.2.2.5 — Compatible with plastic film

Where a compatible plastic film is fitted to support pane removal, the device is designed to retain its effectiveness. The final glazing arrangement must preserve the approved characteristics of the window.

A complete vehicle approval

Evidence remains part of the job

The product design is one part of the approval picture. A vehicle project should document the glazing, device positions, passenger visibility, misuse-prevention measures and the timed operational test for each relevant emergency window.

Glazing and configuration

Confirm that each emergency window uses the applicable toughened safety glass and that the specified installation is suitable for that vehicle configuration.

Installation record

Keep drawings, location measurements and installed photographs showing the device position on every emergency window, including rear-window arrangements.

Timed test

Record the time from the first action on the device until the required free opening is achieved by a single person from inside the passenger compartment.

Technical Service review

Provide the evidence pack to the relevant Technical Service and Type Approval Authority for the vehicle, market and approval route concerned.
